Safari Support for Web Notify

Introducing Safari support for Web Notify. Safari is now included as a supported browser within the Web platform. You can update your implementation today and start reaching your Safari visitors with the same messaging you use to reach users on other browsers.

Safari has been one of our most requested features since launching Web Notify last year. We are glad to now support all major browsers, helping you reach more of your target audience, seamlessly. Thank you for the feedback, and enjoy!

The Safari Difference

Safari push notifications use a different delivery mechanism than most other browsers, which use the Open Web Push Protocol. To put it briefly, a Safari push notification is handled by macOS rather than by the browser itself.

Safari supports all the same functionality as the rest of the Web platform in our system, including scheduling, automation, tags, named Users, custom events, and more. Reporting for Safari is also now included with Web in message reports and also in Connect and Insight.

Our new SDK supports Safari in addition to the other Open Web Push Protocol browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Microsoft Edge. We’ve also made significant updates to our backend delivery tiers to support Safari.

To learn more about how Safari notifications work, see Apple’s developer docs: Configuring Safari Push Notifications.

Setup

Setup is easy. We added a Safari section to the existing Web Notify configuration in the Settings menu.

  1. Create an Apple Safari Web Push certificate.
  2. Configure Safari for Web Notify in your Airship project’s settings. The last step is downloading the SDK bundle in a zip file.
  3. Use the downloaded SDK bundle to update your site’s JavaScript snippet.

Get started by following the steps in Configure Web Notify.
