Engage Messages Menu Guide

The Messages section of the dashboard contains message history, message templates, logs, tools, and more.

Open your project from the dashboard, then click Messages and make your selection. Each section's purpose and options are detailed below.

Messages Overview

Messages Overview is where you can view and manage your sent, pending, and draft messages that were created with the Message, Automation, or In-App Automation workflows. See: Message and Workflow Types.

Tabs organize your messages by status and type: History, Drafts, Scheduled, Automation, and In-App Automation. Message lists are in table format. Available data and actions vary per tab.

History

History lists messages:

  1. Created via the Message workflow that were either delivered immediately or were scheduled and have already been delivered.

  2. Created via the In-App Automation workflow that have been Expired or Stopped for more than 14 days.

Table column headers:

  • Message: The message text.
  • Platforms: The platform(s) selected for delivery. For Open Channel, hover over its icon to see the channel name.
  • Audience: The audience selected for delivery. For any type shown in blue, hover to see its value(s).
  • Delivery: The date, time, and time zone when the message was delivered.

The default view is sorted by delivery date, newest messages first. Click the Delivery column header to toggle ascending/descending order.

Note

Because the messages listed here are drafts, most will not have all of the column data populated. Any data that has not yet been specified is indicated with "--".

Actions

Click an action icon at the end of a message row.

Trash can = Delete message
Deletes the message.
Pencil = Edit message
Opens the message in its workflow of origin.

  • Status: Pending is displayed for any message scheduled for a date and time that have not yet occurred. In Progress is displayed for a message that has started but not yet completed delivery by time zone.

Actions

Click an action icon at the end of a message row.

Pencil = Edit message
Cancels the scheduled delivery, saves the message as a draft, and opens the message for editing.

To delete one or more scheduled messages, check the box at the end of a row, then click the Delete Selected button that appears at the bottom of the list. After deletion, a confirmation banner will appear below the navigation header.

Send templated messages, personalized with the values that are specific to each user. Push Templates are available by default. Contact Urban Airship Support or your Account Manager to provision your project for Email Notifications. After Email Notifications have been added to your project, both Push and Email Templates will be listed in a left side menu. Create templates:

Push Templates: Message Personalization Tutorial
Email Templates: Email Templates Tutorial

Apple News

Apple News is where you can view the Apple News messages that were sent to your Apple News audience.

Table columns headers:

  • Message: The message text.
  • Story: The associated Apple News story's title. Hover over the title to see its canonical URL, or click to follow the link.
  • Countries: The recipient country. One of All, United States, United Kingdom, or Australia.
  • Send Requested: The date, time, and time zone when the message workflow steps were completed by clicking Send Now or Send When Live.

One year of message history is listed, newest first.

Note

After sending a message via the Apple News workflow, a delivery request is sent to Apple. Because Urban Airship does not manage the delivery process, the Send Requested date and time may differ from the actual delivery date and time.

Note

Projects that have been inactive for over 30 days will have all message history removed.

Activity Log

The Activity Log is a unified list of all your messaging activity from both the UI and the API, excepting unicast and Automated messages. The Activity Log is in table format.

Note

Unicast pushes are not included because they could theoretically make the Activity Log unmanageable. For example, a large app could send millions of unicast pushes in a single day, causing the Activity Log to be flooded with these messages and obscuring any other useful information.

Table column headers:

  • Message: The name of the message. Click to open its Message Report. To return to the Activity Log, click your browser's Back button or the view all messages link above the report title.
  • Sent: The date, time, and time zone when the message was sent.
  • Delivery Type: Experiments are groups of messages that are part of an A/B Test. All other messages are Engagement.
  • Platform: The platform(s) selected for delivery.
  • Audience: The audience selected for delivery. Click Details to see its value(s).
  • App Notification Sends: The number of notifications containing user-alerting elements (text, badge, sound) sent to users opted in to push.
  • Direct App Opens:
    • The number of app opens that directly resulted from this notification. Includes Landing Pages, Deep Links, URLs, and Event Tags.
    • The Direct App Open Rate, calculated as the percentage of Direct App Opens / App Notification Sends.
  • Influenced App Opens:
    • The number of app opens that directly or indirectly resulted from your notification. See the Push Influence Primer.
    • The Influenced App Open Rate, calculated as the percentage of Influenced App Opens / App Notification Sends.
  • Web Sends: The total number of web notifications sent to all devices.
  • Web Clicks:
    • The total number of web notifications clicked on by a user.
    • The Web Click Rate, calculated as the percentage of Web Clicks / Web Sends.
  • Rich Page Sends: The number of Message Center Rich Pages sent to all devices.
  • Rich Page Views:
    • The number of users who viewed this Message Center Rich Page at least once.
    • The Rich Page View Rate, calculated as the percentage of Rich Page Views / Rich Page Sends.

The default view is of the last seven days, sorted by sent date, newest messages first.

Note

Not applicable to Web Notify: Influenced Opens, Rich page Sends, Rich page views.

View Options

You may change the date range and download a CSV file of the chosen range.

Date Range

Click Last 7 Days to change the date range. Options are:

Last 7 Days
Last 2 Weeks
Last 30 Days
Last Month
Last 3 Months
Last 12 Months
Today
Yesterday
Custom Range

A calendar will appear after selecting Custom Range. Click to select dates. The Activity list updates after you make each date selection.

Download CSV File

Data exported to the CSV file is limited to what appears in the displayed list. If Show More is at the bottom of the list, click the button until the desired number of entries are listed.

After clicking Download CSV of Current View, download to your default download location is immediate.

Welcome Message

The Welcome Message feature is a default rich page that will appear in every new user's Message Center upon opening the app for the first time.

Note

To implement this feature, you must have Message Center integrated with your application. Message Center is included with the SDK 7.0+. Otherwise, please see the rich push documentation for your chosen platform(s):

Note

Welcome Message is not supported for Web Notify at this time.

Create a Welcome Message

  1. Enter the Title of the rich page.
  2. Enter the HTML that will be the message body.
  3. Click Save.

If you no longer want to send a welcome message, click Delete welcome message. After deletion, a confirmation banner will appear below the navigation header.

RSS Feeds

Integrate an RSS Feed with your push messaging.

Note

RSS Feeds are not supported for Web Notify at this time.

Add a New RSS Feed

  1. Enter the source URL.

  2. Enter the feed Template content, using values:

    {{ title }}: The title of the feed item.
    {{ description }}: The description of the feed item.
    {{ author }}: The author of the feed item.
    {{ url }}: The URL of the feed item.

  3. Click Add Feed.

The Template field contains the message content (in the form of a Push API request) for messages generated by this RSS Feed. The Template should be a message skeleton, rather than a specific push message. Using the provided values, you can create a generic message frame.

{
   "audience": "all",
   "notification": {
      "ios": {
         "alert": "New item! - {{ title }}"
      },
      "android": {
         "alert": "Android users - {{ title }}"
      }
   },
   "device_types": ["ios", "android"]
}

The example is a standard Push API request, with the one difference being the {{ title }} value. So if a feed item with the title "Mayor Runs for Re-election" is posted:

  • iOS users will receive the message "New item! - Mayor Runs for Re-election"
  • Android users will receive the message "Android users - Mayor Runs for Re-election"

Manage RSS Feeds

At the bottom of the page is a list of your currently active RSS Feeds.

To edit a feed's URL or template, click Edit, make your desired changes, then click Save Updated Feed. To return to RSS Feeds, click the Messages dropdown menu and select RSS Feeds.

To delete a feed, click Delete.
